Overview
1 Kings opens at Israel's peak: Solomon's wisdom, a temple filled with glory, a queen visiting from the ends of the earth. Within a generation the kingdom splits in two.
Into the decline steps Elijah, confronting kings and then collapsing under a juniper tree, suicidal with exhaustion — where God feeds him and lets him sleep.
The book's most famous scene is its quietest: not wind, not earthquake, not fire, but a low whisper.
