Lament as Prayer

"How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?"

Psalm 13:1

A full third of the psalms are complaints. Scripture itself teaches us that 'how long?' is a prayer — not a failure to pray.

Lament is not the absence of faith. It is faith refusing to pretend. The believer who cries 'how long?' is still speaking to God. That is the whole point.

If you cannot find words today, borrow the psalmist's. He has left you a vocabulary for the hard days, and the use of it is holy.

Reflection question

What 'how long?' have you been afraid to say out loud to him?
