Matthew writes for readers who know their Scriptures, and he keeps pointing back: this is the son of David, the new Moses, the fulfilment of what has been promised.
Its structure is built around five great blocks of teaching, the first and most famous being the Sermon on the Mount — a description of life in God's kingdom that has unsettled readers for two thousand years.
It ends on a mountain with a commission and a promise of presence.
