A Prayer for Anxiety

A prayer for anxiety, for the middle of it

If you came here with your heart already pounding, you do not need an essay. You need words to borrow. So here they are first — a prayer short enough to pray while your hands are still shaking. The rest of the page will be here when your breathing slows.

A short prayer

Lord, I am anxious, and I am telling You, because You asked me to.

You are near. You have not left. You are not surprised by any of this.

I cannot carry tomorrow, so I am handing it to You, piece by piece.

Give me Your peace — not because my circumstances have changed, but because You are bigger than them.

Hold what I cannot. Amen.

Why Christians still get anxious

Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the idea that anxiety is a faith failure — that if we trusted God properly, we would not feel this. But the Bible does not speak to anxiety as a scandal. It speaks to it as a given. "Do not be anxious about anything" (Philippians 4:6) is not a rebuke to people who should know better; it is an invitation to people who are anxious right now. The very next phrase tells you what to do with it: "in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Anxiety is not the end of the conversation with God. It is the beginning of one.

Scripture to hold onto

When your mind is racing, long passages are hard to hold. These are short on purpose:

  • "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

    1 Peter 5:7

  • "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

    John 14:27

  • "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."

    Psalm 94:19

  • "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God."

    Isaiah 41:10

A slower prayer, for when you have a moment

Find somewhere you can sit. Breathe in slowly for a count of four, and out for a count of six — a longer out-breath tells your body it is safe. Then pray through these lines, as slowly as you can bear:

Father, here is what I am afraid of. (Name it, out loud if you can.)

You have been with me in every day I thought I could not survive. Thank You.

You know what is coming, and You will be there before I arrive.

Teach me to want Your presence more than I want my own outcomes.

Let Your peace, which passes understanding, stand guard over my heart and my mind. Amen.

When prayer is not the only thing you need

Prayer is powerful, and it is not a replacement for help. If anxiety is constant, if it is stealing your sleep or your ability to function, that is not weak faith — it is a signal to bring in more care. Talk to a doctor. Find a Christian counsellor. Tell a pastor or a trusted friend what is actually going on. God often answers prayers for peace through the people and the help He places around us.

Keep walking

If tonight you need more, our page of Bible verses about anxiety gathers twenty passages grouped by what you are carrying, with a short word beside each. And each evening, the evening compline offers a slow way to set the day down before sleep.
